There are so many reasons I whole-heartedly endorse Violette Baillargeon for the role of BCTF Member at Large. I have worked with Violette Baillargeon as a colleague and fellow Staff Rep at our school, as elected members on the Surrey Teachers Association Executive Committee, as members of various committees and as BCTF AGM delegates. As a colleague, she is supportive, knowledgeable and professional. As a Staff Rep, she has mediated several difficult situations with successful resolutions. As an Executive Committee member, she helped bring attention to important issues on behalf of teachers and students. Any committee she has served on was guaranteed a tireless champion and dedicated member. As an AGM Delegate, Violette works purposefully to speak to the important issues affecting the education system. Her ability to articulate these issues and inspire a passionate response from the delegation is truly something to witness.
Violette's dedication to education, our union and the planet is remarkable, especially when you consider she is the mother of an adult daughter, a teenaged son, and twin daughters in elementary school! As a woman and an activist, she is a mentor and a role model, and would serve the role of BCTF Member at Large with intelligence, dedication and passion.

Violette builds solidarity beyond borders
I had the incredible experience of traveling to Orlando with Violette Baillargeon for IB training in 2018, and while the purpose of our trip was professional development, Violette saw an opportunity to strengthen union solidarity as well. On our own initiative, we visited the Orange County Teachers Union during their Representative Assembly, bringing words of support and solidarity from BC teachers. It was a powerful reminder that our fight for public education and fair working conditions is shared across borders.
This is who Violette is - someone who never stops advocating, who sees every opportunity to build connections, and who understands that our strength as teachers comes from standing together. Whether it’s in a school, at a bargaining table, or across an international union movement, Violette is a leader who lifts others up. I have no doubt she will bring that same dedication to the BCTF Executive.

BCTF as a source of collective power for teachers can only be at it's most powerful when its leadership is built out of its own members, ones who understand the classroom, their community, the realities of the teacher experience in every local not just their own, and is unabashedly committed to speaking up at times both convenient/easy and inconvenient/hard/disruptive.
I have seen Violette embody those elements as a Surrey school colleague, as a fellow member of the Local Representative team for the STA, as a vocal voice within Bargaining, and in a much needed force in the push to bring systemic change to save our very planet. She thinks big but plans in the minutiae, and is both passionate and strategic.
Violette works tirelessly, endlessly, and thoroughly at all times constantly learning, growing and very importantly listening. I can guarantee that she will always make space for all voices, will push for equity and Inclusion through the building of capacity at the local level.
Violette is able to breathe life to every aspect of our union from by-law changes to big picture leadership priorities in a way that makes every teacher feel supported, represented, and accounted for.
As a fellow teacher I endorse Violette undoubtedly and unequivocally. She will stand for us collectively, she will fight for us individually, and she will never let our voice as teachers be silenced.
We have so much to say in every facet of our world, Violette will be the speakerphone we need as a strong BCTF.
Annie Ohana, Surrey Teacher and Surrey Local Rep to the BCTF, 2025

Violette Baillargeon will be a great asset to the BCTF. Her compassion and dedication to the earth, to young people, and to the profession will serve us all well in BC schools.
As a colleague, friend, and fellow mom, I have seen Violette’s leadership in so many ways. We know each other through our book club and our regular hikes, where she naturally takes on the role of planner. She finds a date and location that works for as many of us as possible and researches the Indigenous territories we are hiking on. She brings that same thoughtful, inclusive, and well-prepared approach to everything she does.
Violette does not just talk about advocacy; she lives it. The BCTF needs leaders like her who are dedicated, principled, and always thinking of the collective good.

Violette Baillargeon is exactly the kind of leader we need on the BCTF Executive. She is a community-builder who brings people together, an active listener who ensures every voice is heard, and a leader with the experience and vision to make a real difference.
Having served with Violette on the Executive Committee, I have seen firsthand how effective she is at the table. She brings a breadth of experience from both small and large locals, a deep understanding of bargaining and advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to upholding and improving collective agreements for all teachers.
Her leadership is thoughtful, principled, and collaborative. I fully support Violette’s election to the BCTF Executive.

I first met Violette Baillargeon when she showed up at my school on a Wednesday during the #RedforEd campaign. She did not just talk about union activism, she brought it to us in a way that was welcoming, energizing, and inspiring. That day, I felt included in the movement in a way I never had before.

Since then, I have known Violette as a dedicated and approachable leader who makes space for others and ensures everyone feels valued. She understands that strong unions are built on connection and collective strength. Her leadership is exactly what we need on the BCTF Executive.

Violette has an amazing ability to bring a difficult debate back to what really matters. She is a grounded, thoughtful person who leads with her core values first. Violette deeply cares for teachers and our working conditions. I watched her work during her previous executive committee term and saw firsthand how she continually brings the perspective of teachers in classroom back to the forefront in discussions. Violette is open to hear all perspectives and you know when she makes a decision it has been carefully analyzed. She is a strong speaker and an attentive listener. I enthusiastically endorse Violette for Executive Committee Member-at-Large.

I first started getting to know Violette Baillargeon when I attended the very first BCTF Women’s Institute on March 9, 2018. Less than two weeks later, we found ourselves at that year’s BCTF AGM together, and by May, she was leading me on a night of adventure at my first BCTF Zones meeting (including an unforgettable detour that involved crashing a garage band!) By September, I was the newest addition to the STA Executive, serving alongside her as Local Rep to the BCTF. It was the start of what would become one of the most meaningful friendships and mentorships of my life.
Violette has been there for so many of my firsts in union leadership, including my first BCTF Bargaining Conference and my first Representative Assembly. I will never forget a defining moment at that first RA, when one of our leaders at the time asked me who I was voting for. I named one of the few candidates who had truly connected with me and shared my values of reconciliation, only to be met with a sharp rebuke that I was “voting wrong.” Before the embarrassment and fear of “doing the wrong thing” as a brand new LR could set in, Violette swiftly and firmly intervened, “We do not bind votes.” She reminded me that I was elected because our members trusted me, and I should vote however I felt was right. That moment wasn’t just about reassurance - it was about integrity, trust, and leadership. She didn’t just guide me… she empowered me.
From the very beginning, Violette has been a mentor, but more than that, she has been an inspiration. Here was a woman with four children, working full time as a teacher, leading in every union space she entered, spending her free time at climate and MMIW marches (she inspired me to join her in my first march in Vancouver), volunteering at burma shaves and Pride events, and still finding the time to truly connect with others. She never shows stress (maybe it’s all the yoga!), but she is the most grounded person I know, balancing advocacy, work, and life with a grace I have yet to see matched.
Of course, I supported her when she first ran for BCTF Member-at-Large. I knew that her leadership, her vision, and her unshakable principles were exactly what we needed. And when she won, I was so proud, because I knew that our union had just gained a leader who would never waver in standing up for what is right, for what is just, for what is possible.
We have gone on to share so many more firsts: my first BCTF Summer Conference, my first experience rallying at MLA offices (#RedforBCEd), my first school visits - where she taught me all the tips and tricks to facilitate in a way that engages and empowers members. And through it all, our friendship has only deepened.
Violette is not just my colleague. She is one of my best friends. Reflecting on all of this while I write this endorsement, I realize how much of who I am as a union leader is because of her. She has shaped me, guided me, and stood beside me every step of the way. Even now, we continue the work together: decentralizing our structures, strengthening and growing our union by engaging members, standing in solidarity with other unions on picket lines while sharing our stories to build empathy and understanding.
She has this magic way with people. I have watched her deescalate the angriest of members, find common ground where none seemed possible, and navigate the most difficult conversations with grace and conviction. When she facilitated at SFU, she would tell me about the ways she was decolonizing that space and shaping the next generation of educators. She doesn’t just fight for change - she creates it.
In a world that feels increasingly divided and hostile, Violette is exactly who we need at the table again. She is a force, a leader, a visionary, and a true friend.
She is a legend!
Angela Marcakis, STA 1st vice-President, 2025

5"Violette is a leader who sees potential in others and actively works to lift them up. More than five years ago, she encouraged me to run for the BCTF Executive - not just once, but multiple times. At the time, I had never even considered the possibility of being in provincial leadership, but her confidence in me and her unwavering support made me believe it was possible.
As a longtime colleague in Surrey and a fellow STA Executive Committee member, I have seen firsthand how Violette builds strong relationships, mentors emerging leaders, and always thinks about the collective good. She brings deep experience, a collaborative spirit, and an unwavering commitment to teachers across the province. She is exactly the kind of leader we need on the BCTF Executive, and I am proud to support her and call her my union sister."
Rick Kumar, BCTF Executive Committee member, friend, and Surrey colleague, 2025

"It is with great confidence and joy that I support Violette for a seat at the BCTF Executive table. Violette Baillargeon is a passionate, informed, and thoughtful leader and I know she will be a powerful voice for our members. It is because Violette has a natural desire to inform herself of important issues and that she has a tenacious ability to drive to the heart of issues by listening and questioning that I support her - with pride. All My Relations."
Brian Coleman, Langley Teacher, 2019

"I support Violette Baillargeon in her running for member at large. She works hard for all, at times putting herself second. She listens with an open mind and heart, she is ethical in her actions and words. I have watched Violette at AGMs, summer conferences and zones for many years. I am please to support her foR BCTF member at large."
Vicki Willis, 2019

"I have had the privilege of working in the Rep Assembly of the BCTF, along with other decision making bodies of the BCTF with Violette Baillargeon. I have also recently been able to work with her through the Internal Mediation Service of the BCTF. Violette is passionate, caring, empathetic, knowledgeable, and willing to listen. She would make a wonderful addition to the BCTF EC and she would bring her deep commitment to climate change advocacy and social justice. Please consider getting to know more about this amazing colleague and, supporting her bid for BCTF EC."
Kevin Epp, South Okanagan President, 2019

"I am excited to support Violette in her running for BCTF member at large. I met Violette many years ago at a BCTF event. She was encouraging to all members, including new teachers, to participate in union work. Since I met Violette, I have had the opportunity to hear her speaking passionately at the microphone and several BCTF events including AGM's and RA's. I have had the pleasure of traveling out of the country for BCTF business with Violette where continued to speak out on her beliefs despite a language barrier. Violette spends much of her free time fighting for public education and climate action. I am proud to endorse Violette for a member at-large position for the BCTF."
Jennifer McDonald, GVTA LR to the BCTF, BCTF Facilitator, BCECTA PSA Secretary, BCTF International Education Committee

"I am thrilled to endorse Violette for Member-At-Large. I have been teaching with Violette since 2014. She has consistently supported and advocated for our staff, has always made herself available to listen and share, and approaches her work with enthusiasm, passion, and care. As a non union member and someone who is new-ish to the profession, Violette has been a source of information and inspiration. We are so lucky to have her in our corner! I don’t get to vote for her but if I could I would!"
‎Beth Marguerite, Surrey Teacher, Theatre, 2019

"I am overjoyed to endorse Violette Baillargeon for the BCTF EC. This is my fourth year working along side Violette and she makes for an exceptional colleague and role model. I owe so much of my own engagement in our school and our union to Violette. She has encouraged me to run for Staff Committee in which she is a co-chair, then again to be a staff rep at our school which she has been for many years, and every year she encourages us all on the staff to come to the AGM and last year I believe our school brought 8 new delegates, no doubt due to the efforts of Violette. Finally, this year I have made going to the AGM a priority and I am so excited because I will be able to cast my vote in favour of this kind hearted, intelligent, socially and environmentally conscious woman! Violette is not only an engaged activist but she makes room at the table for more voices to be involved in the conversation."
‎Julia Kathleen, Surrey Teacher, Fine Arts, 2019

"I first met Violette at a BCTF AGM 5 years ago. I was impressed with her ability at the microphone to voice passionate and reasoned positions. I thought this is someone I would like to see in a leadership role in the BCTF. Violette is principled and does not take crap from anyone. At the same time, she considers many alternate views. If she doesn't agree with you, she will let you know in a respectful way. I have never met anyone that is so solid in her convictions and is still able to build bridges with others who have different ideas. If there is someone who is tough on issues and not on the person, it's Violette. I'm lucky to have Violette as a friend. All BCTF members would benefit from her presence on our executive.
Go Violette!"
Daniel Tetrault, previous Burnaby Teachers' Association President, 2019

"It is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I am endorsing Violette Baillargeon for Member-At-Large. It has been my honor and privilege to work along side on our local executive and as LR. She has a fast mind, a committed soul and a compassionate heart. She is an amazing listener and builder of the union through member engagement and enthusiastic activism. Not just a leader nor a team builder, but a unique blending of the two. I am delighted to have her co-leading our local bargaining team, and have marvelled at her ability to listen to our members and grasp fully the complexity of the issues. As a longtime activist, I am inspired by her and believe the BCTF would be lucky to have her as an elected MAL. Most recently, she has spearheaded a new and vital Green Committee within our local that is one of the best committees I have seen. I hope that you will take the time to approach and share your views with her, and ask her questions on the issues you believe are the most important to our union. Please consider casting one of your votes to Violette."
Gavin Hainsworth, Surrey Teacher, 2019

"I recently spent a week at the CLC Winter School where I was fortunate enough to meet, learn and work with Violette. I was immediately drawn to her open, straight shooting, genuine personality. Violette brings passion, integrity and determination to everything she does and would be an excellent Executive Member for the BCTF.
Violette’s positive energy brings out the best in those that surround her. Her influence has rekindled my own desire to speak up for those who feel unheard, demand a safe work environment and lobby for political change.
Few humans impress me as much as Violette Baillargeon and I know, if elected, that others will surely agree."

David Price, Executive Member, ILWU Local 400, 2019

"Today is International Woman's Day and I am humbled by this day to remember and honour the strong women who have come before me; women who have sacrificed to give myself (and others) the right to vote, maternity leave, education, and pants; just to name a few things I appreciate - and if not for this day I may take for granted. I greatly appreciate my right to have a voice and thankful that my voice can be heard. I am also made strong by strong women around me, by women I admire and who continue to advocate for all of us - for all of humanity - today, and every day throughout the year. When I reflected on the strong women I admire, images of Violette Baillargeon leading the way, lending a voice to all of us came to mind. What a strong yet humble voice she is for us all. Much gratitude to you for all you do and the voice you bring to women on a global scale."

"I was wandering around downtown that morning, coffee in hand, with not that much going on while my son was in acting lessons. I decided to pop by the AGM, at the Hyatt in Vancouver, to be a spectator and to support my, then, 40,000 colleagues. And, as I settled-in, she appeared. Speaking before a large audience, calm, and collected, and speaking the truth, and speaking so eloquently, and so articulately, and with candor, and with sincerity, and genuinity, and speaking on something that mattered so much, for so many, and doing so, so naturally. "Who is this person?" I wondered, "and how have I never seen nor heard of her?" I knew, immediately, that this was someone very special; very special to me, to my son, to my students and their families, to my colleagues, to our greater community. And I reached-out to her shortly after having witnessed her "first time at the mic" and let her know how impressed I was to witness her address the AGM. That was quite a few years ago and, since then, I have come to know this person as colleague, as activist, as neighbour, as friend, and so much more. This very special person is Violette Baillargeon. She is the real deal and it is only natural to see this individual seek the position of Member-At-Large. I am excited and I look forward to seeing our friend and colleague share her voice, and her experience, and her message, with us all in this important role that she seeks. In a word, it is fitting. And in two words, it makes sense."
Kevin Larkin, Surrey Teacher, 2019

"I have known Violette for many years within my community, and then as I began to advocate for education I learned more about who she is and what she stands for. Violette's passion for education, children, women's rights, justice, and healthy living are sources of inspiration for many, and push me to be my best self everyday. She would make an excellent BCTF Member at Large due to her dedication to the profession and her colleagues alike. Some teachers wake up in the morning, go into the classroom and teach a full day inspiring children to grow and learn. Violette takes that a step further and inspires the adults around her too. She lives and breathes this every day.
I can't wait to her shine in this new role."
Cindy Dalglish, Instructional Designer and Education Advocate, Surrey Students Now, 2019

"The BCTF, like all organizations, needs leaders who are not afraid to push into this century with passion about things that matter most. Well, funny thing, if I had to sum up Violette Baillargeon in a word (that's a tough ask mind you), I would choose "passionate". And I don't think I'm alone in that estimation.
I have worked alongside Violette for many years in our Surrey local. As members-at-large on the STA I recall appreciating her willingness to ask hard questions; to not settle for status quo answers. Then, as we moved into Local Rep positions, I watched as she began speaking to grander union and social issues with growing fervor and precision. I saw her become dedicated to uplifting membership, creating engagement, and supporting those without a voice. It has been my pleasure to be in her corner as she found her joy in calling out for environmental reforms. She truly cares about these matters, and how they will affect her family, her colleagues, and her community. And she is not just talk... she repeatedly shows up (literally) in an attempt to make a difference, and she loses sleep wondering how she's leaving the world for her kids.
I personally value sincerity utmost. I prefer people who can talk to me in a real way, about difficult topics, and who can admit that some problems are too complex for easy solutions. I find Violette does this with ease. She is able to speak with honesty, clarity, and realness. She continually aligns herself with the best ideas regardless of who introduced them. She is quick to give credit where credit is due, and to admit when she may not be the best person for the job. She seems to be able to magically draw in previously-disengaged members, gather them around her, and then help build their capacity in learning to grow our union's health together.
I will always support passionate, sincere, kind, encouraging, well-spoken, and unapologetically principled candidates. Which is why I wholeheartedly endorse Violette in her bid to be elected to the BCTF this March. This woman has got no time for BS. She's a teacher, a mother, a wife, and an activist for people. I respect that. And I know that our union will be better if she is in one of those seats. I want her to represent me."
Andy Nez (Nesdoly), Surrey Teacher, 2019

"The BCTF will definitely be "graining ground" when Violette has the opportunity to bring her passion and persistence to the Executive Table. Once she has determined that something needs to be changed, it's as though her mind laser-locks on the goal. Her work to change the status quo, to redress injustices, and to broaden engagement in the union, is always done with a disarming smile and loving warmth which is what makes her particularly effective in her pursuit of change.
But what I especially enjoy about being in Violette's company and watching her work is that she walks her talk. What she asks of others, she does herself. What she believes, she lives. What you see, is what you get.
When politics can get in the way of good decisions, I would trust Violette to do what's right for our union's members.
I fully endorse Violette for the position of Member-at-Large."
Lizanne Foster, Surrey Teacher, current STA President, 2019

"I think it is great you're running! You will be a strong voice for the federation."
Winona Waldron, Contract and Bargaining Chair, Current BCTF 2nd Vice President, Victoria Teacher, 2019😊'"

"I unquestionably endorse Violette for BCTF Member at Large! I have worked closely with Violette on the STA Bargaining Committee for the last 3 years. I am constantly impressed with her passion for education, students, the environment, and protecting a strong union. She is an advocate for all teachers, we need her voice at the BCTF."

"Violette I would vote for you for any position at any time. You are amazing and the STA and BCTF and lucky to have you in any position."
Christy Van Ieperen, Surrey Teacher

"I am inspired by Violette's activism. As a full time teacher and mother myself, I know how hard it can be to find the time and energy to get involved in the issues we care about. Violette is obviously a woman who wants to make a difference, and I am sure she would make a thoughtful and proactive member of the Executive Committee."
Neesha Vyas Blajberg, District Learning Support Teacher, New Westminster

"There are so many reasons I whole-heartedly endorse Violette Baillargeon for the role of BCTF Member at Large. Kelli O'Malley, Member at Large, Surrey Teachers' Association

"When I heard Violette speak at my very first BCTF AGM, I was immediately struck by her articulate, passionate words. Violette cares deeply about her fellow teachers, her students, and social justice causes. Her dedication to fighting for better working and learning conditions, combating climate change, and building meaningful relationships with those around her is admirable, and sets an example for all of us to follow. Violette is an excellent candidate for BCTF Member at Large!"
Madeline Brewster, Vancouver Teacher

"I was so pleased to hear of Violette's decision to run for BCTF Member at Large! Violette has always encouraged me to be more involved with my union, and inspired me to join to Mediation Team at the STA. Violette is a passionate advocate for teachers and students, and I feel so fortunate that our shared interest in union involvement has evolved into a friendship. I greatly admire Violette's advocacy, energy, passion, and charisma. I know she will represent BC teachers with style!"
Lisa Porter, BCTF Member, STA Mediation Team

"As colleagues you will be a great asset to the BCTF. Your compassion and dedication to the earth and young people will serve us all well in BC schools."
Bernadette Mullen, Surrey Teacher

"I have known Violette from many AGMs and meetings as a Surrey Teacher Representative. She is an eloquent speaker and passionate about making teaching and the world a better place. A dedicated proud mom, an excellent teacher with her warm and bubbly personality. I along with Surrey teachers was especially proud of her outspoken support of the refugees that she visited trying to get to the border. Her compassion and drive for social justice is what the stuff of BCTF teachers are made of. In addition her involvement in various committees of the Surrey Teachers Association has given her the necessary skills to be a leader. I urge you to support her and wish her a speedy road in her bid to our executive."
Niovi Patsicakis, Surrey Teacher

"Way to go, Violette! You will be a fantastic addition to the BCTF executive. I have been so impressed with the work you’ve done while we’ve been on the STA executive together. You work hard to resolve the issues you feel are important and stay respectful to all involved."
Gavin Slade-Kerr, Local Representative, Surrey Teachers' Association

"Violette Baillargeon is not only a passionate educator and Unionist, she is a source of encouragement, a mentor, a capacity builder, and someone who cares passionately about a wide variety of issues including social justice and the environment. I was at my first BCTF AGM, wide eyed and a little overwhelmed, Violette encouraged me to not only speak at the mic, but to continue my involvement with the Union and become a staff rep. I am now a staff rep and have continued to see Violette bring new people to meetings and be instrumental in getting young teachers involved with the Union, and to attend the BCTF AGM. Watching Violette work is Pro-D and having the privilege of working with her on Commitees has helped me be a better member of our Union. I have worked with Violette both on the Green Committee and the Resolutions Committee. In both of these Violette is constantly looking for the best ways in which to tackle challenges that face both her colleagues and our students. Violette will look for the most effective solutions to challenges, and will not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk as she attends rallies in support of the environment, women's rights and anti-racism.
Violette seems to have boundless energy when she tackles challenges, and brings passion and compassion to her work in education. I wholeheartedly support Violette Baillargeon's candidacy for BCTF member at large."
